Just under an hour’s sail from Athens lies the island of Aegina. It is a place that has retained its authentic Greek atmosphere to this day. While the more famous islands are often bursting at the seams under the onslaught of tourists, Aegina seems much calmer and more natural. White houses, small taverns, fishing boats and the smell of the sea create the ideal combination for a relaxing holiday or a day trip from Athens. Aegina is one of the Saronic Islands and, thanks to its location, is a popular destination not only for tourists but also for Greeks themselves. Locals often escape here from the hot metropolis for weekends or during the summer months. So be careful, it can be crowded on weekends.
AN ISLAND WITH RICH HISTORY
Aegina is not just a beautiful island with beaches. In ancient times, it was one of the most important trade centers in all of Greece. It is even said that some of the first Greek coins were minted here. The island had a strategic location on trade routes and for a long time competed with Athens for power and influence in the region. In the end, however, it was Athens that gained the upper hand and the importance of Aegina gradually declined.
Of great historical interest is also the fact that Aegina was briefly the first capital of the modern Greek state after declaring independence from the Ottoman Empire in the 19th century.
A HARBOR FULL OF LIFE
The island’s capital, also called Aegina, welcomes you with a typical Greek atmosphere. Colorful fishing boats, a promenade lined with taverns and cafes, and narrow streets create the perfect place for slow exploration. And I really like to just wander and discover unknown places.
In the evening, the port comes alive even more. Locals sit with coffee or wine, children play on the waterfront, and the aroma of grilled fish and olive oil wafts from the taverns. It is here that one can easily understand why the Greeks rely so much on a relaxed lifestyle.
TEMPLE OF THE GODDESS APHAIA
The island’s greatest monument is undoubtedly the Temple of the Goddess Aphaia. The ancient temple stands on a hill surrounded by a pine forest and offers a magnificent view of the sea and the surrounding islands. The temple was built around 500 BC during the period of Aegina’s greatest glory. It is one of the best-preserved ancient temples in Greece and is considered by many historians to be the predecessor of the famous Parthenon in Athens. Many travelers are surprised to find that the site is significantly less crowded than the famous Acropolis in Athens.
Interestingly, the temple was not only built as a religious site. Due to its location, it also served as a symbol of the island’s power and wealth.
WHO WAS THE GODDESS APHAIA?
The temple of the goddess Aphaia is not just a beautiful ancient monument. The place is surrounded by legends, and the goddess Aphaia herself is one of the most mysterious figures in Greek mythology. Unlike well-known gods such as Zeus, Athena or Poseidon, Aphaia is not very well known outside of Greece. But this is what gives her story a mysterious atmosphere.
According to ancient legends, Aphaia was originally a beautiful girl named Britomartis from Crete. King Minos supposedly fell in love with her. When she rejected him, he began to pursue her. To escape, she jumped into the sea and swam to the island of Aegina.
There she hid in a dense forest and, according to legend, suddenly disappeared. This is where the name Afaia came from, which can be translated as “invisible” or “the one who disappeared.” The locals subsequently began to worship her as the protector of the island and gradually dedicated a magnificent temple to her.
SACRED TRIANGLE
There is one very interesting theory connected with the temple. Some archaeologists claim that the Temple of Aphaia, the Parthenon and the Temple of Poseidon at Cape Sounion form an almost perfect equilateral triangle. The atmosphere of the place is especially impressive at sunset, when the marble columns turn golden.
It is not certain whether this was the intention of the ancient builders, but such a connection adds even more mystique to the place.
STATUES THAT STUNNED THE WORLD
The temple was once richly decorated with statues of warriors and gods. These statues are among the most important examples of ancient Greek art. However, in the 19th century they were taken to the Glyptothek in Munich, where they are still located today. Today, visitors to the temple itself can only see copies.
There is still debate whether the art treasures should be returned to Greece, like the famous Parthenon marbles.
ATMOSPHERE OF THE PLACE
The most fascinating thing about the Temple of Aphaia is its atmosphere. Unlike the crowded Acropolis, it is often quieter and one can better imagine the spiritual significance of the ancient sanctuaries here. The wind from the sea, the smell of pine trees and the view of the surrounding islands create a unique experience. Many travelers claim that it was here that they felt the magic of ancient Greece the most.
It is most beautiful to visit early in the morning or at sunset, when the entire temple is colored in warm golden hues and the surrounding landscape acquires an almost fairy-tale atmosphere.And when one stands among the ancient columns high above the sea, it is easy to understand why the locals believed that the goddess who managed to disappear without a trace resided here.
ARCHAEOLOGICAL MUSEUM
The museum is located in the archaeological site of Kolona, north of the island’s capital. It was founded in 1829 by the first Greek governor, Ioannis Kapodistrias, making it the first museum in independent Greece. The museum is housed in a building next to the excavations and is divided into three main rooms. You will find artifacts from prehistoric times to the Roman period. You will find collections of vases, coins, marble statues and sacrificial objects from the nearby Temple of Aphaia and the Temple of Apollo.

In the summer season the basic entrance fee is €10, during the winter months it is reduced to €5.
Opening hours: It is usually open daily from 10:00 to 17:00, closed on Tuesdays.
PISTACHIO – THE GREEN GOLD OF AEGINA
Aegina is famous throughout Greece for its pistachios. The local climate is ideal for growing them, and the pistachios here are among the highest quality in the world. As you walk along the harbor, you will come across shops selling pistachio products almost everywhere. In addition to the classic nuts, you can also try pistachio ice cream, sweets, honey, and liqueur. Every year, the island even hosts a pistachio festival, which attracts visitors from all over Greece.
MONASTERY OF AGIOS NEKTARIOS
An important pilgrimage site is the Monastery of Agios Nektarios, one of the largest Orthodox monasteries in Greece. The monastery is dedicated to Saint Nektarios, who is highly revered in Greece. The locals believe that he had healing powers and pilgrims still come here to ask for help or healing. The interior of the church is decorated with beautiful frescoes, golden icons and typical Orthodox decoration.
BEACHES AND SWIMMING
Aegina is not an island of large luxury resorts, but that is precisely its charm. You will find smaller beaches with clear water and a peaceful atmosphere. Agia Marina is a popular area with a long sandy beach and turquoise sea. Quieter places can be found mainly on the west coast of the island.
Many beaches are surrounded by pine forests, so they offer pleasant shade even during the hot summer.
THE ISLAND IS IDEAL FOR SLOW TRAVEL
Aegina is the perfect destination for those who want to experience a more peaceful and authentic Greece. The island is not huge, so you can comfortably drive around it in a few days by car, scooter or bus. Unlike the busy tourist centers, one can still find ordinary Greek life here. Elderly men sitting in cafes, fishermen mending their nets or small family-run tavernas without pomp. It is this ordinariness that makes Aegina a place many people like to return to.
HOW TO GET TO THE ISLAND
How to get to Piraeus Port
First you need to get to the port of Athens itself. If you are coming from Athens Airport (ATH): Take the direct bus line X96, which will take you to the port in about 90 minutes. You can also use the metro (blue line 3).
If you are coming from the center of Athens, take the metro from Syntagma Square or Monastiraki (green line 1 or blue line directly to Piraeus station), which will take about 25-30 minutes.
How to get to the island
You can only get to the island by ferry or fast boat from the Athens port of Piraeus. Fast boats make the trip in about 40 minutes, classic ferries in about an hour and a quarter. Thanks to the short distance, Aegina is ideal not only for a longer holiday, but also as a day trip from Athens.
There are frequent daily connections between Piraeus and Aegina. You can choose from two types of boats:

Aegina is not an island of extravagant attractions or luxury hotel complexes. Its strength lies in its atmosphere. The combination of history, beautiful sea, great food and easy-going Greek life creates a place where it is easy to slow down and forget about everyday stress. And perhaps that is why Aegina wins the hearts of travelers much more than some of the more famous Greek islands.
