NETHERLANDS
A country where cheese is a religion, bicycles rule the streets, and windmills are still trendy
Welcome to the NETHERLANDS website, a country where everything is equal – from the landscape to the attitude of the locals. Here, people cycle more than they drive, windmills are a national treasure, and cheese? There are more varieties of cheese than the average restaurant menu.
You will learn two things here: that tulips are not just flowers, and that Gouda cheese is a better investment than gold.
If you like museums, get ready: from Van Gogh to Anne Frank, you will find more exhibitions than free benches by the canal. And if you hear that you are going to a “coffee shop”, you better clarify in advance what exactly you plan to drink or… smoke. Outside Amsterdam, a fairy-tale idyll awaits you. Zaanse Schans offers iconic windmills that look so perfect that they could be the backdrop.
And my first truly Dutch impression is the bricks. And the windows. And especially the bikes. Those bricks are the local color of Holland: a green landscape with houses made of tiny red, white-paired bricks. So pack an umbrella (the weather here loves surprises), comfortable shoes (the sidewalks are a shared battlefield) and prepare to take more than just tulips with you from Holland. Maybe even a slight addiction to Gouda cheese.
