LATEST HIT: TO THE SEA FOR A FEW DAYS. GO TO MALTA!

Maybe you feel the same way. You need to switch off and the only thing that will do you good for your soul is to fly somewhere. I love airports! You might remember the opening scene from the movie A Novel for Women, when Zuzana Konócz introduces her mother Simona Stašová: “Mom loved airports. As soon as she enters the airport hall, she starts thinking in English, but with a Czech passport.” That’s exactly me. :-))

This environment calms me down and just the feeling of flying somewhere gives me the right adrenaline rush. I think Malta is a great way if you want to spend your holiday in an attractive place but don’t want to travel for a long time. You will find many beautiful sights and most importantly a beautifully colored sea awaits you there.

WHY FLY TO MALTA?

There are so many reasons, but if I had to tempt you with something, it would be the turquoise blue water. You will feel like you are in the Caribbean, yet you are a 2.5 hour flight from Prague. For me, a great destination for those who need a good dose of vitamin sea.

If you don’t have many days of vacation left and want to go to the sea, fly to Malta. There are direct flights to Malta. and reasonable money.

MY TIP:

Malta has a few interesting things you should keep in mind.

  • Drivers beware, they drive on the left
  • tap water is drinkable, but it is desalinated, so people don’t like it very much, so it’s better to buy bottled
  • there are jellyfish in the sea, so be careful
  • instead of Coca Cola, have the local drink made from bitter oranges Kinnie
  • you will need a UK adapter for the socket
  • the public transport network in Malta is dense (buses), but a car will give you more flexibility and save you a lot of time

WHERE TO STAY? ST. JULIAN

If you search for accommodation in Malta on the internet, you will see hotels in this town, St. Julian. This former fishing village is located in a small bay. There are hundreds of small fishing boats anchored in the harbor. What is really cool is that you can wander through the small streets and admire other sights. But what is best is if you just walk along the sea directly to Valletta.

THE CHURCH WHEREVER YOU LOOK

Malta is a Christian country. You will realize that strong Christian traditions prevail here at every step. For example, in Valletta alone there are thirty churches. They are richly decorated and each has its own story.

MARATHON

RUN A HALF MARATHON OR MARATHON

Or you can just run! Every year, a half marathon and a marathon are held here in one. The running route runs nicely along the coast all the way to the capital city of Valletta. Live music is playing at every step and enthusiastic tourists are cheering on the runners. Pedestrians pass between these runners. If you don’t believe in yourself or are not in shape, you can walk the whole route. You know, it’s not important to win, but to take part. 🙂

FISH

BUY SOMETHING GOOD

IN MARSAXLOKK

Marsaxlokk, the largest fishing port in Malta, is famous for its fish markets. More than half of the fish is caught here. Markets are held every day, but the biggest one is every Sunday. In addition to fish, you can also find things for everyday use.

LOĎKY

RIDE ON THE LUZZU BOAT

The harbor is small, but it will definitely fill you with energy. It is amazing to watch the colorful boats “LUZZU” swaying on the sea surface. They are brightly painted in yellow, red, green and blue. On the bow there are a pair of eyes, which are attributed to the Egyptian god Osiris. They are supposed to protect fishermen from disasters.

MDINA

DISCOVER THE SILENT CITY OF MDINA

In the Middle Ages, Mdina was called the “Noble City” because the nobility lived there. Today’s Mdina is far too quiet for such a prominent tourist destination, which is why it has earned the nickname “Silent City“. In the 16th century, it was even the capital. Mdina is considered one of the most beautiful cities in Malta. In these picturesque streets of this city, it is as if time has stopped. There are many palaces, chapels, churches and massive medieval walls. And thanks to this rich mix of architectural monuments, this town is essentially one large pedestrian zone, where motor vehicles are prohibited.

WALK THROUGH VALLETTA – THE PEARL OF MALTA

I think almost everyone knows this famous port from pictures. It has unmistakable architectural gems with a beautiful cathedral. I think it is rightly on the UNESCO list. The streets from the 16th century are really beautiful.

Valletta was founded by the Knights of the Order of St. John to protect the so-called Grand Harbour. St. John’s Cathedral is a truly breathtaking Baroque masterpiece. It houses Caravaggio’s masterpiece “The Beheading of John the Baptist”. The decoration here is truly magnificent. It is said that the floor of the church is one of the most beautiful in the world. You will find tombstones of knights of different colors on it. If you bring a backpack with you, they will force you to carry it in front of you right at the entrance. Just like me. 🙂 This is so that you don’t break anything.

WHAT TO TASTE?

Your first steps should lead to a Pastizzeria, which is a bakery, usually a window with a menu counter facing the street, where you must try the cheapest typical Maltese specialty – pastizzi. It costs about 50 cents (EUR) and is a pastry filled with ricotta cheese. The dough is made with lard, so it is quite fatty. Probably the second most important filling is peas.

Another typical Maltese dish is ravioli, again filled with ricotta. And if you prefer meat, then go for rabbit, it is the Maltese national dish. You will pay around 15 EUR for it. As Malta is close to Italy, it is quite influenced by Italian gastronomy. So of course you will find pizza and pasta everywhere.

Jednou z nejrušnějších ulic je Public street. Je to taková hlavní pěší tepna města, kterou lemuje spousta obchůdků, kaváren a restaurací.

bus

TRANSPORT IN MALTA

Be sure to keep in mind that they drive on the left. If you don’t decide to rent a car, bet on buses. Malta and Gozo are good destinations for those who don’t want to rent a car. There are many public transport buses. Just as in Italy all roads lead to Rome, in Malta all roads lead to Valletta. For you, this means that if you decide to go anywhere, you will almost always go through the capital. You pay 1.5 Euros on the bus and you have two hours to get to your destination. And if you are not sure where to get off, there is nothing easier than asking the driver. English is spoken here.

MŮJ TIP:

  • Public transport timetables – here or download the Tallinja app to your mobile (info and public transport)
  • Weekly card Explore Card Malta and Gozo costs 25 EUR (valid 7x24h from the first beep)
  • Ferry timetables to the island of Gozo-  here
  • If you want to get to Gozo quickly, try speedboat fromValletta and you’re there for 45 min (price 7.50 EUR, return ticket for 12, children under 4 years free)

SEA VIEWS

I was in Malta in February. Almost everyone was wearing winter jackets and I was just wearing a T-shirt. 🙂 In short, if it’s below 20°C, the locals are cold. However, I was experiencing the first signs of spring. So if you’re thinking that you need to switch off for a while and fly out of the republic for at least a while while staying in Europe, don’t hesitate and visit Malta.
