MINI GUIDE TO STREET ART IN LOS ANGELES

MINI GUIDE TO STREET ART IN LOS ANGELES

Los Angeles is known for its movie stars, glitz, glamour, beaches, and year-round beautiful weather. But the city has so much more to offer visitors and locals alike. It’s not often that the world gives a city enough credit for its art scene—or in this case, its street art scene. If you’re looking for mainstream art, head to Los Angeles for its amazing museums and incredible galleries. But I’m more fascinated by the city’s murals. And if you’re anything like me, these L.A. street art pieces should be on your must-see list.

So what makes Los Angeles a favorite spot for street art? The city has been home to many street artists for decades. The year-round beautiful weather makes wandering the streets a little more inviting than in places with harsh, dark winters. It’s clear that this benefits the street art community, which thrives best when it’s not raining or snowing.

FROM THE HISTORY OF STREET ART IN L.A.

The city is home to a diverse culture and immigrants who bring their own style, cuisine, and culture. All of this influences street art. Mexican painter David Siqueiros was one of the first to bring this early form of street art from Mexico to the western United States with his work América Tropical (1932), and others soon followed.

We’ve put together a guide to the most famous street paintings in Los Angeles, California, to help you plan your street art adventure.

ARTS DISTRIKT IN CENTRAL L.A.

The Arts District in downtown Los Angeles is a must-see if you’re serious about it. And that’s a good thing, because so many of the coolest things are located in just one neighborhood. Starting in the 1970s, artists began moving to this area of Los Angeles, holding exhibitions, staging productions, and opening cafes and small theaters. It’s still a popular spot for the arts community today. Add in breweries (Angel City Brewery is a favorite) and restaurants among the concentration of colorful and beautiful pieces, and it’s easy to see why it’s such a great place.

STREET ART IN MELROSE AVENUE

Melrose Avenue is a popular place for shopping, dining, and cafes. It’s also a great place to stroll and see street art. Here’s a small sampling of some of the street art you’ll see on and around Melrose Avenue.

Don’t be surprised if you see a lot of people flocking to these murals to capture Instagram-worthy photos. The walls on Melrose Avenue are simply perfect for anyone looking to spice up their “Instagram feed” and boast one of the most Instagrammable places in LA.

The only problem is that these murals are spread out along a long street, so it takes a long walk. Better wear comfortable shoes or you’ll end up with blisters like me.

Start near Fairfax Avenue and walk east. Keep your eyes peeled because there are murals everywhere. Look up at the rooftops of buildings and down at the sidewalks. And don’t forget the side streets and alleys, which are some of the best places to see street art.

COLETTE MILLERS ANGEL WINGS

#AngelWingsProject

Global Angel Wings (2012) is a street mural movement founded by artist Colette Miller in Los Angeles. It began as a simple graffiti mural, but as the movement took off, others began painting angel wing murals around the world. This soon grew into Miller’s Global Angel Wings Project, which encourages the painting of angel wings to “remind humanity that We are the Angels of this Earth.” A pair of angel wings can even be seen at the Grammy Museum in Los Angeles.

Colette Miller’s Angel Wings quickly became a major cultural attraction in Los Angeles. Visitors from all over the world took photos with the Angel Wings. They completed the mural by standing in the middle of the wings. Miller still runs the Global Angel Wings Project today, and new variations of the work are constantly being created around the world.

The project, which started right here in Los Angeles, subsequently spread all over the world, to countries like France, Mexico, and Japan.

After you’ve taken your angel photo, go around the corner, walk across the parking lot, and then turn into an alley where you’ll see murals on garage doors. It’s a parking lot full of street art.

PAUL SMITH’S

PINK WALL LOS ANGELES

Perhaps the most popular spot is the pink wall at Paul Smith’s. The pink wall is a phenomenon that has made Melrose Avenue one of the most Instagrammable places in the world. In fact, if you’re planning on visiting the pink wall during peak hours, make sure to pack some snacks because the line will be long. Still, thousands of people wait in line to get the perfect photo. I honestly didn’t have the nerve to do it, so I took a picture of it from a distance.

A local landmark that became famous for thousands of selfies and Instagrams taken on the #pinkwall. Inspired by Luis Barragán‘s confident and optimistic use of color, this Melrose Avenue store opened its doors in 2005 (yes, five long years before Instagram even graced our phones).

GIRLS TOUR WALL MELROSE AVENUE

So it occurs to me that it’s probably best to pose with a group of girls.

THE DREAMER&THE BELIEVER

This mural, located in front of the black-owned Sorella boutique, remained untouched during the protests that followed the death of George Floyd.

LOVE WALL

Its author is James Goldcrown.

WORK OF THE ARTIST WRDSMTH

This artist’s work is as simple and memorable as his typewriter stencil with the text above it. It tells you to “dream more” or “strive to inspire others and the universe will take notice.” Isn’t that amazing? This writer turned street artist has a magical ability to express what we all feel or need to hear often, and even turn it into a work of art. Keep an eye out for these works, there are quite a few of them!

ALEC MONOPOLY

Alec Monopoly is an internationally renowned graffiti artist. His signature work depicts luxury and excess. His work features characters such as Uncle Pennybags, Richie Rich, and Uncle Scrooge McDuck. Today, with his art becoming a popular collector’s item among famous actors and musicians, Monopoly continues to use his work to create a dialogue about pop culture and capitalism in modern society.

VENICE BEACH

Venice Beach, a neighborhood located on the beach, is where you can find more colorful artwork. There is a tribute to Starry Night on the boardwalk, which is a favorite for many. Nothing is more Californian than palm trees, sandy beaches, and colorful art.
